What is a urine ovulation prediction test?
A urine ovulation prediction test detects the presence of luteinizing hormone (or LH) in your urine. Right before ovulation, the LH in your body will increase (called the “LH surge”). The presence of LH in your urine will indicate that you are likely to ovulate soon. Urine ovulation prediction kits usually contain 5 to 9 tests to be performed daily during the time of suspected ovulation. The brightness or intensity of the color on the test strip correlates with the amount of LH in the urine. Using these tests, you can tell when your LH levels increase and peak, which indicates that ovulation is likely to occur. Some urine ovulation prediction tests measure other hormones in the urine, such as estrogen (Clearblue Easy Fertility Monitor). There are a wide variety of urine ovulation prediction kits available. Some of these tests are simple while others are more sophisticated. Traditional kits consist of urine test strips that allow you to predict the 24 to 48 hour window around ovulation.
