What is a tweeter and what are its advantages?
A higher frequency driver, commonly dome shaped, with a small (~1″) voice coil. The small lighter weight dome and VC allow for higher frequency reproduction. Larger drivers cannot accurately reproduce higher frequencies due to their size and the natural inductance of the larger voice coils producer a db attenuation at higher frequencies. The need to be crossed over usually – using a device that will disallow the lower (2k hz and below commonly) frequencies from coming through. If allowed, the tweeter will blow itself trying to reproduce the “throw” of the lower frequencies. Common also is the use of ferrofluid to keep the VC cooled and prevent blowing the driver.
