The term trencher comes from the Old French tranchier, which means to cut. During the Middle Ages a trencher was a hunk of old bread that was stale and hard enough to be cut into a rough square. This square of bread was used to serve food on instead of using a plate. At the end of the meal the trencher was frequently given as alms to the poor.
