What is a Training Allowance Billet (TAB)?
A TAB is an authorization for extended training. There are various types of TABs-recruit training, A-school, graduate school, etc. The TABs for graduate school must be competed each year. Specifically, the two to three dozen Coast Guard programs, which require graduate school, request one to ten or more TABs each year. This equates to more than 300 TABs requested each year. Unfortunately, there are typically less than 140 TABs available. A panel is convened to determine the number of TABs for each program; decisions are made based on the needs of the Coast Guard.
