What is a Tone Alert Radio (TAR)?

Tone Alert Radios (TARs) are a part of the Etowah County Alert and Notification System. TARs instruct residents to tune to the local radio stations, which will provide additional information through the Emergency Alert System (EAS). EAS stations work with the emergency officials to provide clear emergency instructions to the public. Alabama Emergency Management Agency contracted with Warning Systems, Inc. (WSI) to develop and install tone alert radios. TARs will be installed in every special facility (schools, daycare facilities, hospitals, public buildings) within a thirty-mile radius of the depot, which is known as the PAZ (Protective Action Zone).
