What is a TLD or gTLD?
A “Top Level Domain” is what comes after the last dot in a Domain Name. Or, to put another way, what is to the ‘right” of the final dot. Some of the most commonly known Top Level Domains are: .com, .net, and .org and .au. The Top Level Domain types such as .com, .net and .org have been around for many years (since the Internet took its current form). Most of the possible (and comprehensible) Domain Names have been allocated from these TLDs. I have registered my top level domain name from this site Tucktail.com
In the Domain Name System (DNS), the highest level of the hierarchy above second level domains is Top Level Domains (TLD). Our Domain Name – pagekeeperservice.com – for example is part of the Internet address for PageKeeper Service. The ‘pagekeeperservice’ part is the second level domain while the .com is the Top Level Domain. There are two types of Top Level Domains. The most common type is Generic or gTLDs, such as .com, .net, .org. New gTLDs such as .biz, .info or .web are expected to be introduced sometime in the future. The other type of TLD is the ccTLD (country code top level domains) which is assigned to specific countries and their dependencies. Every TLD registry – generic or country code – has its own prices, policies, and procedures that registrants (Domain Name holders) in that registry are subject to.
