What is a thyroid condition?
Your thyroid is the butterfly shaped gland in your neck. It’s main job is to regulate your metabolism. When it’s not working properly, either hypothyroid or hyperthyroid, then your metabolism is too fast or too slow. Hypothyroidism is more common (especially in women) and it results in extreme fatigue, coldness, loss of hair, weight gain, etc. In extreme cases, a goiter (swelling of the thyroid-thus an enlarged neck) can result. Hyperthyroidism has the opposite symptoms, racing heart, lots of energy, always hungry, weight loss, etc. Other thyroid conditions include cancers of the thyroid. Usually thyroid conditions can be diagnosed by a blood test looking at TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone). A normal value for TST is between 0.2 and 5.0, but this may not be the case for every individual.
