What is a Thread?
A “thread” refers to several messages on the same topic. If you and five other people send messages to each other with the subject “Favorite scene from program X,” they will all be bundled under a single “thread” in your inbox. Threads on a topic are also created in forums to prevent a new topic from being started for every reply. If you reply individually to a single person at a point in the conversation, the system will create a new thread between you and him/her.
When one or more people reply to a particular message, a “thread” is created. A thread is a series of posts that go together. If you’ve ever heard of someone “following the thread of a conversation,” you get the idea. If you post a new message, then that starts a new thread. If you reply to an existing message, then that message becomes part of the original message’s thread.
