What is a the degree needed for a Music Composer?
Music composition is an art and as an art your level of talent is far more important than any classes you take or grades that you get. A degree is not required of composers but you’ll learn a lot about the art and develop your skill in college. To be accepted into the music composition concentration of the music major, you’re going to need a portfolio of your compositions. Make sure that your piano/keyboard skills are strong and that you can use the leading music publishing software (Finale or Sibelius) fluently. For game music you’re going to need to be very strong in midi technology as well. The degree you’re looking at is a Bachelor of Music in Composition. The Bachelor of Arts in Music will not offer near the amount of music theory and composition that you’re interested in and will require music performance classes as well.
