Samuel Morse invented the telegraph several years before Thomas Edison was born, although Edison did make some improvements. A telegraph is basically an electromagnet, a coil of wire that becomes a magnet when electric current passes through it. The electromagnet pulls a hinged piece of metal against the coil, causing an audible click. When the current stops, a spring pulls the moving piece back, creating a different kind of click. The operator at the other end pushes a telegraph key (an electrical switch) to turn the current on and off. The code used for ham radio is usually called Morse code, but it is different from the code originally used for telegraphy.
