What is a Teach-In?
A teach-in is a day when an entire university, school, group, or faith organization puts aside business as usual to come together to focus on a single topic. Teach-ins involve faculty, students, staff, and citizens from all disciplines and fields of interest. The National Teach-In on Global Warming Solutions consists of four main components.
A teach-in is a forum for sharing knowledge that doesn’t rely on “experts”. At a teach-in, we recognize that everyone has something to teach and something to learn. And it can be much more productive and empowering to create our own learning space; in this way, it feels more like a festival than a conference. A teach-in is an informational gathering designed to help individuals better understand particular issues of public interest. This teach-in is specifically designed to help Christian college students explore the complex issues surrounding the proposed war on Iraq and to encourage dialogue about creative, nonviolent alternatives to war. Tips for Preparing for a Teach-In: Step 1 – Coordinate leaders for the event. These leaders will be responsible for facilitating the nightly teach-in sessions. It may be a good idea to organize a team of 5-10 people who will take turns leading the sessions throughout the week. The literature is pretty straightforward, so the sessions can be led by anyone. It may be helpful to think of people with specific interest or expertise in the subject matter. A teach-in is a form of nonviolent protest which uses one of the most powerful protest tools of all: educational empowerment. At a teach-in, attendees can sit in on forums, discussion panels, lectures, and free debates about a topic. Typically, controversial and under-reported topics are chosen for a teach-in, with the goal of increasing awareness about these issues and encouraging people to act on them. The concept of the teach-in arose in the 1960s, when students and staff at many universities wanted to participate in the growing anti-war movement, but found protest actions difficult on university grounds. When groups were told that protests would be met with stiff opposition, the Students for a Democratic Society organized the first teach-in, which took place on a college campus in Michigan in 1965. The organizers of the event thought that since protest would be too difficult, they should try using education to engage the community, and in the process, they created a very effective

It is a chance to inform people about an issue and provide them with opportunities to take action. Thus teach-ins are meant to be interactive as well as informative. Participants of a Teach-in are welcome to ask questions and discuss issues so that they can understand the topic clearly. Amnesty groups can use teach-ins to educate the members of their own group. They can also make use of teach-ins as an outreach device to educate and mobilize other people in their community.
