What is a System?
A system is a collection of different elements that together produce results not obtainable by the elements alone. The elements, or parts, can include people, hardware, software, facilities, policies, and documents (www.incose.org). From this definition, we understand that, a “system” can be anything that consists of smaller parts that work together to form that system. And a system can be very small or very large.
A System allows you to select more than the standard 6 numbers. For example, a System 7 allows you to pick 7 numbers and a System 8 allows you to pick 8 numbers and so on. The highest amount of numbers you can pick is 20 which is a System 20. The benefit of playing a System is that your entry is equivalent to playing every possible combination of 6 numbers. For example, if you are playing a System 8, your entry is equivalent to all 28 possible combinations of 6 numbers from your 8 selections.
A system is a collection of interacting parts functioning as a whole. It is distinguishable from its surroundings with recognisable boundaries. The function depends upon the arrangement of the parts and will change in some way if parts are added, removed or rearranged. The system has properties that are emergent, that is they are not contained within any of the parts, they exist at a higher level of description.
