What Is a Surgery Tech?
Surgical technologists, also called surgical technicians or surgery techs, assist physicians during operations along with registered nurses. Most surgery techs work in hospitals. Others are employed in doctors’ offices, dental clinics and outpatient care centers. Main Responsibility The main responsibility of the surgery tech is maintaining the sterility of the operating room and all instruments. Preparatory Work Before the operation, the surgery tech gathers all instruments and supplies that the physician will need, then counts, sterilizes and arranges them. The tech also makes sure all diagnostic equipment is functioning properly. Surgery Support During the operation, the surgery tech hands instruments and other supplies to the surgeon when needed. Additional Duties Surgery techs also maintain the supply of fluids including blood, plasma and saline during an operation, continually assess operating room conditions, and monitor the patient’s vital signs.
