What is a substantive edit?
In a substantive edit, the editor assumes responsibility for reviewing, commenting upon, and suggesting modifications to the content of a written communication. The aim is to help author(s) identify facts or arguments that need checking and decide what material might usefully be added or removed. Taking account of purpose and audience, the editor also focuses on ways of making the material well-organized and accessible. After generating queries concerning intent and meaning, a GT editor will implement agreed-upon changes, writing or re-writing text as needed. A substantive edit might also include suggesting appropriate charts, tables, graphics, sidebars, call-outs, or internal and external links (e.g., cross references, indices).
