A. www.domain.com is a domain name. A subdomain is anything that replaces the www in a domain name.forum.aol.com is a subdomain. www.forum.aol.com is not a subdomain.

subdomain is any term you want before your domain. For example you have a domain www.x.com and say you want to create another webpage. You can create a subdomain another.x.com and it can be like a whole separate webpage. In essence it is a domain as well. So it is a very nice feature to have.

The most common subdomain is WWW. Most websites have WWW.name.com and the WWW is the subdomain of the second level domain: name. Subdomains are often used by tv stations. http://weather.cnn.com and http://program-name.tv-station.com. Subdomains are also frequently used for free webhosting or paid special names such as profession.com where for example a lawyer might be able to get http://LAWYERNAME.lawyer.com as his subdomain for a site. Subdomains can also have www. in front of them, e.g.: http://www.lawyername.lawyer.
