What is a Sub-domain?
A sub-domain is similar to a directory under a primary domain name. For example, if there is a domain name called “www.hostname.com” a sub-domain name might be called “www.hostname.com/~yourcompany/” or www.yourcompany.hostname.com. There can be multiple sub-domains under a domain name, but the sub-domain name cannot be used by itself to find a web site, for example, www.yourcompany.com, because it does not have its own IP address.
A sub-domain is a website address. The address is a different format to regular domain name addresses because it has two “names” and then the extension. E.g. Your domain is at say “www.yourdomain.com” the address of a sub-domain would be “www.subdomain.yourdomain.com”. Where “subdomain” is something that generally give a description about the sub-domain. I.e. www.parcels.postoffice.com where “parcels” is a sub-domain of postoffice.
