What is a Student Health Insurance Program?
Massachusetts college students are required by law to have health insurance. The health insurance must meet the minimum requirements that are stated in Massachusetts regulations 114.6 CMR 3.00 (PDF). All Massachusetts colleges and universities offer their students a health plan that meets these requirements. The health plans are called Student Health Insurance Programs (SHIPs). Students who want to enroll in a Massachusetts college or university must pay for the school’s SHIP plan or show that they have other health insurance that is at least as good (“comparable coverage”). The Massachusetts Division of Health Care Policy and Finance (DHCPF) regulates the SHIP programs. If you have any questions regarding the student health insurance regulations, you can call the DHCPF at 617-988-3100 or 1-800-888-2250. Note: The Student Health Insurance Program was previously called the Qualifying Student Health Insurance Program – QSHIP.
