What is a standalone computer and what are its advantages/disadvantages?
A “standalone computer”, unless you mean in some context I’m not aware of, would indicate a computer that did not have any sort of connection to other computers, e.g. a network connection (which could include a connection to the Internet). So, if you have a computer sitting there that can’t connect to the Internet or any other computers, you can’t accomplish any of the tasks you might want to do that depend on those things (such as check email, browse the Internet, download updates and/or software and/or games, share files with other users — anything not locally stored on that computer). The thing is — I have to guess that you must have run across this term somewhere and just not understood the implications, because this is not really a practical distinction. You can turn a “standalone computer” into a networked computer by adding appropriate hardware and connections (i.e. plugging a modem in and dialing up an ISP, or installing a LAN card and attaching the computer to a network).
