What is a spot colour?
A spot colour is a specially mixed ink used in printing. Spot colour inks use precise mixing formulas to create a wide variety of colours, including metallics and flourescents. Unlike CMYK (process) printing which creates a limited spectrum of colours by printing layers of just 4 specific inks, spot colours are pre-mixed by hand using many basic colours and one ink is used for each colour in the publication. Spot colour printing is best used for holding colour that is constant throughout the piece, as well as company identity colours that must be applied consistently across a wide range of applications.
