What is a sports hernia?
A sports hernia occurs when there is a weakening of muscles in thelower abdomen wall. It is most common in athletes such as hockey, football, and soccer players and exacerbated by running, cutting, andbent forward position.
Symptoms include a slow onset of dull pain in the lower abdomen, groin, and testicles (male). There are no proven treatments for sports herniaother than surgery. The recommended first step is to rest and let thesymptoms go away. If this does not help, surgery is needed.
A way to prevent sports hernia is to make sure you stretch the groin thoroughly before engaging in any sports activities.
