What is a spinning reel?

0

A spinning reel spool is stationary, with the rotor/line guide revolving or spinning around it. Spinning reels are designed to mount below the rod. In use, the rod is held in the right hand and the handle is turned by the left hand (this would be a normal right-handed setup). Spinning reels usually have handles that can be moved from the right to left side as preferred. The spinning reel can handle line weights as low as 2 pound test, and can cast very light lures, when matched with the proper rod. Rods for use with spinning reels have reel seats on the bottom of the handle, and have the line guides mounted on the bottom of the rod blank. The line is suspended below the rod by these guides, which are usually fairly large close to the reel, tapering to smaller sizes towards the tip.
