What is a Speech Language Pathologists background?
To be a certified Speech Language Pathologist, a person must complete undergraduate courses in communication disorders and also a 2-year graduate program in Speech Language Pathology. Additionally, the person must pass a comprehensive national board exam and meet extensive guidelines for supervised clinical placement hours. Once the person is certified (CCC-SLP) the person must complete a designated number of hours of continuing education to maintain certification. SLPs who work in schools must also complete hours of school-related professional development to maintain their teaching certifications.
