What is a Specialized Cell?
A specialized cell is a cell which is adapted to perform a particular function. The red blood cell is one example of a specialized cell adapted to the function of oxygen transportation. It has specific structures/qualities which make it ideal for its purpose, e.g a red blood cell has concave shape to maximise surface area and so make oxygen exchange more efficient. When groups of specialized cells work together to perform a similar function they are call tissues, tissues then form organs. The process of a less specialized cell becoming more specialized is called cellular differentation. Stem cells are cells which have the ability to differentiate into a wide range of specialized cells.
