What is a Sorority?
A sorority is a sisterhood of college women which enables women with common interest and goals to live and work together and enjoy a close friendship. It differs from a girl’s club in that each chapter is affiliated with the national organization which directs and assists them by sending regional and national officers to visit the chapter each year. Local alumni also work with local chapters by offering guidance and support. Friendship, scholarship, leadership, and character are common goals of every sorority. Although some of the same goals are shared, each sorority strives to preserve their individuality as it relates to their founding principles. Overall, each young woman has unique qualities derived from various backgrounds, and chooses to devote those qualities diligently in a sorority. What is Alpha Kappa Alpha? A sorority is a female-only association comprised of women who have common interests or who share a common trait. The most famous form of the sorority is probably the North American college sorority, although college sororities can be found in other regions of the world as well. Women can also form social sororities outside of the college framework. The goal of a sorority is to create a group of women who are bonded by their common membership. In the sense of a college sorority, prospective members usually attend sorority events during a period early in the semester which is designated as “rush week.” During rush week, people can visit numerous sororities to get a feel for each one’s members and style. If people want to join a sorority, they submit an application, and the existing members vote on the applications at the end of rush week, using their interactions with prospective members as a guideline. A sorority is a sisterhood of women that have gathered together to promote a common set of ideals and purposes. To understand more fully what a sorority is and its purpose we must go back in time to the end of the 1900’s. In the 19th century, colleges were for men only, and fraternities were going strong on college campuses across the nation. By the end of the 1900’s women were finally able to pursue higher education in college, yet college still remained predominately male environment. To triumph personally and academically in this environment, women searched for encouragement and support as well as an outlet for their talents and dreams. As a result, sororities began to be founded, and their spirit of promoting the ideal women has survived. Why join Tri-sigma and what can it offer me?
