What is a sole-source aquifer?
According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), a sole-source aquifer is an underground water supply designated as the only or principal source of drinking water for an area. EPA uses two criteria to decide if an aquifer can be designated: • It must provide the main source (at least 50 percent) of drinking water for people living in the area. • There can be no other feasible drinking water source in the area.
