What is a Social Security mismatch letter?
The SSA issues notices to employers when a social security number that does not match their identity records has been submitted to them. You may receive one of these letters even if you have strictly complied with all I-9 requirements. An employer must re-check its I-9 and W-2 records, and look for typos, middle names, name changes, etc. Request that the employee check his or her social security number, and resolve the issue with the SSA on his/ her own. Set a time limit for how long the employee has to resolve the discrepancy. The time limit is not mandated by the SSA, but it should be less than 30 days.
