What is a slabbed hearth and or a slabbed back panel?

A. A slabbed hearth and or back panel is the commonly known term/name for hearths & back panels when used with solid fuel fireplaces. Unlike a hearth or back panel for use with a gas fire which are usually a 1 piece construction without any joins. A hearth or back panel for use with solid fuel must be made in sections with expansion joints to avoiding the material cracking during the heating up and cooling down process. The hearth and back panel will also have a concrete support under or behind the material be it tiles, granite or marble to give additional support and insulation as well. When solid fuel hearths and backs are manufactured they are what is commonly known as slabbed up in manufacture.
