What is a sinkhole and why do they form?

Sinkholes form in Central Florida because the geology is comprised of a deep layer of limestone that is filled with holes, caves and caverns. At some locations, the soil over the limestone flows down into holes in the limestone creating a depression of the ground surface known as a sinkhole. The sinkhole typically fills with water and becomes a pond or small lake. The process of sinkhole formation is illustrated in Figure 2. Figure 2.
