What is a similar fold?

A similar fold is one whose shape is repeated exactly from layer to layer. If the layer dips are significant, this causes the thicknesses of the layers to change going from the crest, along the limbs, to the trough. See figure below. Such folds are notionally most relevant to deformation conditions in metamorphic belts.
