What is a SIM card?
A. SIM stands for Subscriber Identity Module. A SIM card is a small “smart card” for GSM/GPRS mobile phones that contains your personal account profile as well as saves important information (i.e. network information, account services, your mobile phone number, stored telephone numbers, SMS messages and more). The SIM card must be inserted in the handset in order for it to operate.
The SIM (Subscriber Identification Module or Subscriber Identity Module) card – a.k.a. “smart card” – holds all of a subscriber’s personal information and phone settings. In essence, it is the subscriber’s authorization to use the network. It also holds the phone number, personal security key and other data necessary for the handset to function. The card can be switched from phone to phone, letting the new phone receive all calls to the subscriber’s number.
A Sim Card is the hardware with which you actually buy and use ‘air time.’ It fits into your phone, and gives you access to specific network providers. So, just like a computer needs to link up with an Internet Provider before you can surf the web, a mobile phone needs a network sim card to communicate with the world.
