What is a sidereal day?

0

The normal (solar) day is calculated by timing the rotation of the earth relative to the sun, which moves. A sidereal day is the same rotation, but this time relative to the stars, which are stationary, for all intents. The difference is only about 4 minutes on the Earth, but planets like Mercury and Venus have a much bigger difference.
