A shear matrix when multiplied by point coordinates shifts the points all in the same direction. The amount of shift is proportional to the distance from some line parallel to the direction of the shift. Some examples: A rectangle would be transformed to a parallelogram, a square to a rhombus, a circle to an ellipse with major axis tilted. See below reference in wikipedia.
