What is a self-winding watch ?
In a self-winding watch, the energy required to run it is provided by wrist movements of the wearer. This energy, captured by means of an oscillating weight (which is in gold on AP movements) is transmitted to the mainspring via the automatic mechanism. The spring coils progressively around an arbor and thus stores up this energy. The stored energy is then released at a steady rate to power the running of the mechanical watch, even if the watch is removed from the wearer’s wrist.
