What is a Security Perimeter Vehicle Access Portal (SP VAP)?
In the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, Security Division conducted several studies to determine how the Laboratory could be better protected against a terrorist incident. Results of the studies indicated the need for better control of access and for roadway enhancements to create access control security posts around certain Laboratory buildings and facilities. The first phase of establishing such controls involved placing vehicle access control posts at certain locations in the Technical Area 3 “core” of the Laboratory and at locations along Pajarito Road. The new SP VAPs represent the second phase of vehicle access control. Where are the SP VAPs located? There are now two VAPs associated with the Security Perimeter Project; one is on East Jemez Road and one on West Jemez Road. The current SECON post located on Pajarito Road near White Rock will be re-designated as the third SP VAP when full operations begin. The East Jemez Road VAP is located near the southeast
