A Security Digital Video Recorder or DVR is the most effective device used to record, play, and view surveillance video. The DVR uses a hard drive to store video (like a computer) which means there are no tapes or cassettes to load. Most DVR’s come with channels that you simply plug security cameras into via a BNC connection. Most DVR’s are packaged in 4, 8, 16, and 32 channel configurations. The number of channels equals the number of security cameras you can connect to the DVR. You will also notice when choosing a security video recorder you can choose the size of your hard drive. Most DVR manufactures offer recorders with hard drive sizes ranging from 160 Gigabytes up to 5 Terabytes.
