School Travel Plan outlines how a school intends to encourage safer walking, cycling (if appropriate) and public transport use on journeys to and from school. The aim of the plan should be to increase road safety and reduce congestion. The government wants every school in the UK to do a School Travel Plan. A School Travel Plan (STP) is a document that identifies the aims and objectives needed to reduce car use and promote sustainable transport such as walking , cycling, public transport and car sharing for school journeys. An STP establishes how pupils, parents and staff currently travel to school. The STP then goes on to find out how these groups would like to travel, identifies what barriers exist to prevent them from doing so, and finally suggests ways to overcome the barriers. STPs provide a framework for changing travel habits within the school community and aim to provide an environment that encourages sustainable travel habits. As well as promoting cheaper, healthier and more enjoyable travel options STPs try to deal with other problems within and around schools, such as pollution and wider environmental problems, congestion at the school gates and associated road safety issues.
