What is a run on sentence and a sentence fragment? Thank you?
Run on sentence- two or more independent clauses joined improperly. To break that down a little farther- an independent clause simply means that it has a noun and a verb and can stand on its own. “I ran home” is an independent clause, because it meets the previous criteria. In contrast, “Since I ran home” is NOT and independent clause, regardless of the noun and verb. This is because it can not coherently remain on its own. Now, to join two independent clauses, you need either a comma followed by a coordinating conjunction (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so) or a semicolon. If it has neither of these, it’s run on. Ex- “I bought a taco but it was cold” and “I bought a taco it was cold” are both run on. “I bought a taco, but it was cold” or “I bought a taco; it was cold” are the fixed versions. A sentence fragment simply means that it can’t remain on its own. This doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have a noun or verb, it may have both, actually. “Leaving her by the bus” is a fragment, for examp
