What is a Rube Goldberg machine?
Goldberg’s cartoons used a string of outlandish tools, people, plants, and steps to accomplish everyday tasks in the most complicated way. He used simple machines and household items already in use. They were incredibly wacky, but somehow the “Inventions” always had an ingenious, logical progression as they worked to finish their task. What makes a good Rube Goldberg machine? A successful Rube Goldberg machine combines a number of objective and subjective qualities that fulfill tasks and follow rules. Here are qualities keep in mind: • The machine works. When it starts, it runs all the way through to completion without human intervention and completes the required task. • The steps are clearly visible. • Does not use flammable or dangerous materials. • Parts should not fly (or roll) away from the machine. Each group was assigned a different task, such as: pour a glass of water, flip a switch, pop a balloon, flip a coin, or ring a bell. Here are a few of the GREAT masterpieces!
