“Roofie” is the street name for the drug Rohypnol. Rohypnol is the brand name for the drug Flunitrazepam, a medication with strong sedative effects. Rohypnol’s main medical use is for short term treatment of insomnia. It is produced and marketed outside of North America; the possession, trafficking, producing and importing of Rohypnol in Canada and the U.S. is illegal. Rohypnol belongs to a family of medications called benzodiazepines. Benzodiazepines are central nervous system depressants which mean that they decrease anxiety, cause drowsiness, slow heart rate as well as breathing rate. It also makes a person’s reflexes and thinking process slow down. For more information, click here.
