What is a Rogue AP? Can the rogue APs in my wireless network be automatically blocked?
A. APs that are not part of your wireless deployment are called rogue APs. It can be either an autonomous AP or Lightweight AP that happens to be in the range of authorized APs. Rogue APs cannot be automatically blocked. This must be done manually. The reason for this is that, when a rogue AP is found, the finding AP disassociates the clients of the rogue AP, which causes denial of service to the clients. This can cause legal issues if the AP of the neighbor is detected as a rogue, and its clients are denied service. For more information on how rogue APs are detected by the WLC, refer to the document Rogue Detection under Unified Wireless Networks.
