What is a Ringtone?
A ringtone is an excerpt of a musical composition embodied in a digital file and rendered into audio. Ringtones are stored in an end-user’s mobile telephone, pager or other portable communications device and played whenever the device activates its ring or alert function (upon the arrival of a call, message or other notification). There are two basic types of ringtones: Phonic Ringtones and Pre-Recorded Ringtones. Phonic Ringtones are, most commonly, standard MIDI sound files that are either monophonic, where the ringtones are recreated using standard single notes, or polyphonic, where notes can be played simultaneously creating harmony and/or counterpoint. Pre-Recorded ringtones play actual clips from sound recordings. It should be noted that the term ‘Pre-Recorded ringtone’ is not the standard term industry-wide. They are also known as Trutones, Songtones, Master Ringtones, etc.
Ringtones are digital files that let you customize the sound your phone makes when you receive a call. • What is the difference between Music Tones and Ringtones? Ringtones is used to refer to polyphonic ringtones. Polyphonic ringtones play a programmed version of a song through a small synthesizer chip on your phone to get the various instrument sounds. They mimic multiple instruments in the song to produce a semi-realistic representation of the song. Music Tones is used to refer to master music tones. Master tones are an exciting new ringtone format for some mobile phone models. They allow a clip or sample of the actual recording of a song to be played as an alert or ring on your phone! • Is my carrier one that you support? A ringtone is a tune that can be set up to play as a string of simulated tones when your handset is receiving a call. Ringtones allow you to express yourself by personalizing the sound your handset makes when it rings. Ringtones can be ordered through a download link on a website, a wap site, a multimedia album or by sending a text message to an SMS “short code” (like 55666), depending on your handset capabilities and your wireless carrier.
