What is a residency program?
top The Family Medicine Residency Program is the branch of the Foundation which provides physicians with three years of postgraduate training in the specialty of family medicine. During their training, resident physicians provide comprehensive health care under the supervision of board certified family medicine physicians. Upon graduation, these physicians provide a source of family physicians choosing to practice in this and surrounding communities. During their three-year training program, the physicians receive training in internal medicine, obstetrics/gynecology, surgery, pediatrics, emergency medicine, family medicine, community medicine, psychiatry and behavioral science, orthopedics, otorhinolaryngology, ophthalmology and dermatology. In addition, they may use elective time to concentrate on specialties and sub-specialties of their choice.
A residency program is a period of education and training in a chosen specialty that physicians undergo after they graduate from medical school. Most residency programs last from three to seven years, during which residents care for patients under the supervision of physician faculty and participate in educational and research activities. When physicians graduate from a residency program, they are eligible to take their board certification examinations and begin practicing independently. Residency programs are sponsored by teaching hospitals, academic medical centers, health care systems and other institutions. • How does the accreditation process work? The work of reviewing specific programs and making accreditation decisions is carried out by 27 residency review committees one for each major specialty, as well as one for transitional year programs. A Residency program is period of training for doctors following medical school graduation and a 1-year internship. New physicians receive advanced training under the supervision of a fully licensed practitioner in a specialized area such as surgery, internal medicine, pathology or radiology. The successful completion of a Residency program is required in order for a physician to be certified by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). The length of a Residency program varies according to the medical specialty, for example family medicine or pediatric Residency programs are typically three years long, while programs for surgical specialties may last more than five years. Some schools offer the opportunity for a physician to be trained in a combined Residency program, such as in the fields of internal medicine and pediatrics. St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital offers new graduate nurses the opportunity to participate in a planned and mentored first work experience. The program provides the new graduate with classroom activities, clinical experiences, and ongoing support as they pursue their career. Participants are hired for the January, June and September programs.
