What is a reservation?
In the U.S., there are only two kinds of reserved lands that are well-known — military and Indian. An Indian reservation is a landbase that a tribe reserved for itself when it relinquished its other land areas to the U.S. through treaties. More recently, Congressional acts, executive orders and administrative acts have created reservations. Some reservations, today, have non-Indian residents and land owners.
A rail pass or rail ticket will allow you to board a train but will not guarantee you a seat. By making a reservation, you are ensured of a seat on a specific train at a specific time and date. Seat reservations can be purchased for most long distance trains but not for some local trains. All reservations are subject to confirmation and are at an additional cost. Some services (e.g TGV in France) require a seat reservation before boarding. Trains Requiring Reservations: • Some InterCity and EuroCity trains that require reservations are designated with an “R” in European timetables. • High Speed Premier Trains, Overnight and Hotel Trains. • Swiss Speciality Scenic Trains.
