What is a registration lock and why does it contain such a long string of characters and numbers?

The registration lock is currently only used in conjunction with SCO’s OpenServer 5.0.7 or UnixWare 7.1.3 products. It is a unique code comprised of data from your license number, system ID, product ID, and a number of other variables which pass critical information to SCO’s registration application. This string of data also informs the registration application whether or not your OpenServer 5.0.7 or UnixWare 7.1.3 product is enabled for SCO Update Service. SCO Update Service requires its own license which can only be generated via the product registration process. In addition, the registration application collects and stores critical notification information which will be used to distribute SCO Update Service announcements and updates. Because the registration lock is such a long string of characters and numbers, SCO has provided several methods of pre-populating the registration lock field, including a Browse button, a direct URL from your e-mail application, and cut and paste.
