What is a Registrar?
A registrar, also known as a Domain Name Registration Service, is a company that inserts your domain name into a directory of all the domain names and their corresponding computers on the Internet. The registrar you choose will ask you to provide various contact and technical information that makes up the registration. The registrar will then keep records of the contact information and submit the technical information to a central directory known as the “registry.” This registry provides other computers on the Internet the information necessary to send you e-mail or to find your web site. You will also be required to enter into a registration contract with the registrar, which sets forth the terms under which your registration is accepted and will be maintained. Each registrar sets the price it charges for registering names, and prices vary significantly among different registrars.
A Registrar (also known as a Certification/Registration Body or CRB) is a third–party company that is contracted to perform an impartial evaluation of an organization’s quality, environmental, or other management system’s conformance to the requirements of the appropriate ISO standard, and to issue a registration certificate once conformance is verified.
A registrar is responsible for maintaining a company’s register of shareholders. The register of shareholders records the names and addresses of all ordinary shareholders and the number of shares that each shareholder owns. The register is maintained on behalf of the Company by Equiniti (Jersey) Limited (‘the registrar’). The registrar updates the register when a shareholder’s personal circumstances or shareholding change, and also sends out dividend cheques and share certificates.
A registrar is an organization or company, such as Webnames.ca, that is authorized by its respective government or by ICANN (the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) to provide registration services for domain names. A registrar must also be authorized by the registry to act as an agent of the registry to process domain name registrations, where the agent is not a reseller.
