A referenced image, within an email message, stores only the URL/Internet location of the image (e.g., http://www.templatezone.com/rs/users/john_smith@yahoo-com/signature.gif) and displays the linked image in the email when you are connected to the Internet. Hence, an email message with referenced images results to a smaller file size as compared to an email message with embedded images.
