What is a Reference Sequence (RefSeq)?
The NCBI Reference Sequence project provides a non-redundant collection of richly annotated genomic DNA, RNA and protein sequences from numerous organisms. The RefSeq sequences are derived from GeneBank records, but differ in that they are not submitted primary sequences. Instead, they are highly-curated sequences that represent the consolidation of current knowledge of a gene and its transcripts, analogous to a review article in the literature. The RefSeq database acts as a stable reference for genome annotation, gene identification and characterization, mutation and polymorphism analysis, and provides a baseline for medical, functional, and comparative studies. For more information on the RefSeq Project see http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/RefSeq/.
