A real time operating system is one where by instructions are executed at a quicker rate than they are being supplied to the system. An example of a real time operating system Imagine a queue of people at the checkout in you local supermarket. If the queue of people stays the same length then this means that the lady on the checkout is processing the customers at the same speed as they are arriving. If the queue of people grows longer then the checkout lady is not processing the customers quick enough and is getting overloaded with people. In the same way with the real time operating systems, the flow of data is processed quicker than it is arriving. This means that there will be no back up of data and thus less chance of it being lost. Another feature of real time operating systems is that the instructions are executed at precise times.
