What is a ranged estimate, and why should I estimate in ranges?
A ranged estimate is a best- and worst-case estimation of how long it will take you to complete a task. For example, saying you will beta test your company’s new website in 3-4 days is giving a ranged estimate. Saying you will complete that task in 2 days is giving what is called a single-point estimate. Since most of us think about time in ranges, ranged estimates work like we work. They set realistic expectations and timelines that help teams work better, and more happily.
