What is a Quartile Quartiles are the values used to divide a set of numbers into four equal groups. Put the numbers in order and divide them in half using a median. To the left of the median, the numbers are separated again, and to the right of the median, make a third separation. At this point, your data is divided into four groups, and the three markers are the actual quartiles. Notice that there are four groups, but this is done with three quartiles, which are numbered left to right as Quartile #1, Quartile #2 and Quartile #3. Quartiles and Medians Medians are used to determine the three values referred to as quartiles. Median stands for the middle number. When your data is all in order such as: 3, 4, 5, 10, 15, 20, 22, 33; you will want to find the median. There are two middle numbers, 10 and 15. So the median is (10 + 15)/2 = 12.5.
